This conference will present and examine the findings of a major international research project, focussing on the effects of educational theatre and drama on five of the Lisbon Key Competences in Education. The DICE Project (Drama Improves Lisbon Key Competences in Education), funded by the EU Comenius programme, is a substantial and innovative piece of research conducted over the last two years, across twelve European countries and in Palestine, by professional partners from the fields of drama, TIE, young people and children’s theatre and youth theatre. The initial findings are already hugely significant for artists, educators and policy-makers in arts education and education generally:

Young people who do drama at school are:

  • 13% more likely to accept people of other ethnicity
  • 8% more likely to vote
  • 11% more likely to get involved in politics or campaigning than those who do not do drama.

The conference will present the research methodology and disseminate findings from it. There will also be a practical demonstration of educational theatre and drama based on documented practice from an Educational Resource pack which will be published alongside the research findings. Each delegate will receive copies of a Policy Paper with recommendations for action in schools and at local, national and EU government levels; and the Education Resource which has been created for professionals working in primary, secondary and tertiary education in the field of educational theatre and drama.

Key Speaker : Professor Jonothan Neelands, Warwick University
Chair : Ros Robins, Regional Director, Arts Council England

Big Brum, leading British theatre-in-education company with almost 30 years' experience, is the UK research partner of the DICE Project and will be hosting this, one of twelve international conferences, to launch its findings.
