• Our nine principles of working

Big Brum has a creative pedagogy based on many years’ experience of working directly with children and young people of all ages and abilities. Our renowned Theatre in Education learning programmes combine live performance with affective participatory activities, to engage young hearts and minds. Our work is delivered according to our following ‘Nine Principles of Working’ with children and young people.

  • 1. Trust every child

Big Brum vows to treat young people not as undeveloped adults but as human beings in their own right, respecting their experiences and understandings, getting to the heart of what it is to be human.

  • 2. High teacher-young people ratios

We facilitate small group work with up to 30 young people to ensure a high ratio of actor teachers to young people, maximising participation and inclusion.

  • 3. Free for all audiences

A very important factor in breaking down the normal socio-economic factors that prevent young people from accessing the arts, especially theatre and drama.

  • 4. Be crystal clear

We have clear and candid discussions with schools before we perform, identifying any special approaches that may be required.

  • 5. Make art accessible

We’re bringing art into a familiar space that young people already inhabit, breaking down a common barrier of arts engagement: attending arts venues and the “alien” effect that has on young people.

  • 6. Build safe spaces

We are carefully crafting every drama session so young people can place themselves into theatre and respond to reality a safe distance from their own experience.

  • 7. No wrong answers

Big Brum demonstrates that there are no wrong answers because we are interested not in what is “correct”, but in what young people think and the process by which they come to these conclusions.

  • 8. Ask the big questions

We question effectively and are renowned for our ability to utilise poignant questioning with young people to open up imaginative responses and help them think in new ways.

  • 9. Get lost in the moment

We work in the moment, entering sessions with the goal to respond to the ideas of the young people present as they process what they have seen and want to discuss with our people.
