Paper Umbrella

TOURED: Feb – Mar, 2020

‘Paper Umbrella’ is a past Theatre in Education programme based on a recent short play by Rowan Padmore. The play echoes the Grenfell Tower fire tragedy and prompts urgent questions about authority, community, society and the pressures upon people growing up with the stark realities of disadvantage, injustice and prejudice.

Rowan Padmore is an exciting contemporary playwright who has worked extensively with community groups and Crisis, the national homelessness charity. Sadly, the tour was curtailed by the closure of schools in late March 2020 as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, however, we plan to bring the artistic team back together to film the play as part of our birthday year in 2022.

A pleasure to have Big Brum in yesterday to share ‘Paper Umbrella’ with our students. Such a moving artistic response to the Grenfell Tower fire. It Left us with lots to reflect on and question
— Dr Rachel Turner-King, Assistant Professor, University of Warwick
I would just like to send my sincere gratitude, for myself and our Year 10 and 11 students who had the privilege to watch ‘Paper Umbrella’ here at Kings Heath Boys on Tuesday. It was really wonderful.
— Lisa MacFarlane, Head of Drama at Kings Heath Boys School
Thank you for the professional and thought-provoking experience you created for my trainee drama teachers. The programme provided a stimulating and purposeful learning space. Not only was the day a thought-provoking experience in terms of TiE as an approach to learning, it was also incredibly developmental in the conceptual understanding of young peoples’ learning in drama for my teachers.
— Chris Bolton, Drama Education Lecturer at Birmingham City University
